Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund

Community

The Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund is a community donations and sponsorship program that supports community initiatives in and around the communities of Wandoan, Taroom and Miles. It is part of Xstrata Coal’s commitment to supporting the communities in which it operates.

Donations made in 2009

In 2009 donations totalling over $90,000 were made from the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund to 35 different local community organisations. Some of the major donations were given to:

  • Wandoan Show Society for the Wandoan Show
  • Wandoan Bowls Club for a patio extension at the club
  • Wandoan Kindergarten for painting their building inside and out
  • Wandoan State School for the annual Yr 7&8 Camp which takes local students to Brisbane for a week of adventure and learning
  • Apex Club to install a permanent gas BBQ in Apex Park
  • Queensland Council of Carers for the Family Fun Day

What we are looking for

To receive funding from the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund, applicants must provide services or manage community initiatives that contribute to the wellbeing and development of the Queensland communities of Wandoan, Taroom or Miles. The Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund will support community initiatives in Xstrata’s six focus areas: health, education, social and community development, enterprise and job creation, environment and arts and culture.

To be eligible for funding, the organisation or association making the application must:

  • be a not-for-profit organisation
  • demonstrate how the funding will directly benefit the communities of Wandoan, Taroom or Miles
  • demonstrate the applicants’ expertise and ability to manage the proposed initiative in a professional manner
  • demonstrate financial sustainability, not only through fund raising but also from other initiatives
  • have a high level of community involvement and a commitment to actively encourage this involvement
  • be an incorporated body operating a separate, auditable organisational bank account
  • report back on the use of the funds by completing a post grant feedback form

Xstrata Coal will look favourably on organisations that have made efforts to raise funds through alternative funding sources, which have demonstrated a commitment to financial sustainability and are organised and clear about the objectives of their organisation and/or event. Examples of community initiatives that Xstrata Coal has funded through various other community funds include:

  • sponsorship of major community events: agricultural shows, rodeos, Christmas carols/carnivals
  • equipment and coaching clinics for local sporting groups
  • upgrading facilities and equipment for community groups
  • contributions to charitable groups that provide local social services such as diversionary centres, hostels and crisis accommodation, meals-on-wheels, aged care, kindergartens
  • contributions to schools and other educational facilities for equipment or upgrading facilities
What Xstrata Coal will not support

In line with Xstrata plc’s CSI policy guidelines, the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund will not support:

  • individuals, including those seeking support for activities such as academic studies, competing in a sporting event, travel or raising funds for another organisation
  • political parties, political organisations, politicians or candidates for public office
  • touring sport teams
  • religious activities
  • any activities which are exclusive to one faith community
  • conferences or speakers at conferences or symposia
  • production or distribution of advertising, including audio-visual, print or electronic media
When to apply

Applications to the Xstrata Coal Wandoan Community Fund will be accepted at any time. Funding will be distributed quarterly, on dates coordinated with major community events. Applications will be considered by a Committee of Xstrata staff and local community representatives. Successful applicants may then be required to provide an invoice to Xstrata Coal and upon receipt of the invoice funds will then be provided to the organisation or association.
