Coal and Climate Change
We recognise climate change is a reality that presents social, economic and environmental risks. These risks are global and require a global solution.
Access to an affordable, reliable and secure energy supply is fundamental to economic and social development. The reality is there is an increasing global demand for coal for power generation, and the International Energy Agency predicts this demand will continue.
We recognise the future will be a carbon constrained world and believe emissions reductions from the use of coal as an energy source are necessary and achievable.
Our Sustainable Development Policy sets out our commitment to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions produced directly from our activities and indirectly from our energy usage, and to work with other organisations, including governments, to address climate change.
We are investing heavily in initiatives to reduce emissions from our coal mining activities. We are also taking a leadership role in researching, developing and demonstrating a number of low emission technologies and other initiatives to reduce the level of greenhouse gas emissions associated with the combustion of coal in power generation.
