Environment

Xstrata Coal Queensland (XCQ) is committed to the highest standards of environmental management and performance.

Since May 2007, XCQ has undertaken more than 22 technical studies for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The draft EIS is the first step in the project approval process and provides an outline of the environmental management practices and standards Xstrata Coal will implement if the project proceeds.

The EIS studies involved water, dust and noise monitoring and comprehensive analysis of existing flora and fauna. Each of these studies identified potential environmental impacts that might arise as a result of the project and ways to either prevent or reduce each possible impact. The studies also provide benchmarks for measuring possible future impacts.

Xstrata Coal takes its responsibility for the local environment very seriously and will implement world-leading management practices and standards to manage our greenhouse footprint and minimise any potential impacts.

The project team plans to manage our operations with consideration for animals, plants, waterways and the community that live in and around the proposed mine site and its associated infrastructure.
