Environment
Overview
Xstrata Coal takes its responsibility for the local environment very seriously and will implement world-leading management practices and standards to manage our greenhouse footprint and minimise any potential impacts. Since May 2007, XCQ has undertaken more than 22 technical studies for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). Each of these studies identified potential environmental impacts that might arise as a result of the project and ways to either prevent or reduce each possible impact.
As well as these studies, XCQ has a comprehensive environmental monitoring program in place that is gathering baseline data on air quality, ambient noise and water quality.
If the Wandoan Coal Project is approved, XCQ will continue monitoring the environment and implementing prevention or mitigation techniques to ensure the operation meets best-practice environmental standards.
XCQ will also implement a combined Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Management System in line with Xstrata’s 17 Sustainable Development Management Standards. These standards have been cross mapped with the Minerals Council of Australia’s Enduring Value Principles for sustainable development.
The draft EIS is the first step in the project approval process and provides an outline of the environmental management practices and standards Xstrata Coal will implement if the project proceeds.
