Xstrata Coal works to eliminate safety incidents in the workplace by identifying, assessing and, where reasonably practical, eliminating or otherwise controlling hazards. We do this through our leadership, management standards, safety systems, engineering standards and behavioural programs to ensure our employees take the right decisions to remain safe as they carry out their work.  An equally important aspect is ensuring effective leadership in safe working procedures from our managers and supervisors.

Eliminating fatalities and serious injuries is the key safety challenge for Xstrata Coal, with a particular focus on the following hazards:
 

• mobile equipment
• work methods
• equipment failure
• fall of ground, and
• electrical hazards.

At this early stage some of the specific programs we have implemented at the Wandoan Coal Project include:

• Comprehensive auditing of contractors’ safety standards and work practices to ensure they meet Xstrata standards.
