Wandoan Coal Project Media Guidelines
The Wandoan Coal Project’s Community Relations Department and Xstrata Coal Corporate Affairs are responsible for handling all enquiries from the media regarding the Wandoan Coal Project.
We address all enquiries on a case-by-case basis and wherever possible, we try to respond either in writing (media statement or email advice), through access to the mine’s spokesperson, or by providing images and footage on request.
On some occasions, our ability to meet requests may however, be constrained by:
- the availability of spokespeople;
- legal or corporate considerations and requirements given we are wholly-owned by the publicly-listed Xstrata plc;
- the status of discussions or negotiations on the matter being investigated; and
- our ability to respond within the news cycle given that some commentary requires approval from Xstrata plc.
These guidelines have been prepared with a view to building better understanding and working relationships with media.

Official spokesperson
The Wandoan Coal Project Executive General Manager is the official spokesperson for the Project. The Executive General Manager may opt to nominate an alternative spokesperson depending on the story.
Where work or travel commitments prevent the Executive General Manager from providing a verbal comment, we will try to at least provide a written response.
Please be aware that Xstrata Coal Queensland (XCQ) employees are not authorised to provide comment to the media about our operations.
Media site visits
All visitors need approval to enter the Wandoan Coal Project sample pit area and must be hosted at all times by an XCQ employee. You will be required to undergo a site induction procedure in line with XCQ’s safety standards. This may include drug and alcohol tests under a zero tolerance policy.
Your XCQ host will coordinate your site induction, supply you with suitable safety equipment and transport you around site. If possible, please bring your own steel capped boots as we cannot guarantee all sizes can be catered for.
Filming policy
If you have approval to visit the Wandoan Coal Project area and have a photographer or video cameraperson with you, then please discuss with your XCQ host the shots that you are interested in taking.
There are designated areas where images can safely be taken. However, other images may be difficult to get depending on the operational status on the day.
